Annual awards – 

Each year at the annual lunch, which in 2009 was held at The Saddler’s Hall in London, the association presents awards for outstanding achievement during the preceding year. This year the award winners were:

 

 

 



Kristina Cook Riding Miners Frolic

Championships, Fontainebleau

Personality of the year
Event rider Kristina Cook was voted ‘personality of the year’. After gaining Olympic team and Individual bronze in 2008 Tina followed up this achievement with team and individual gold at the 2009 European three-day event in Fontainebleau with  British bred Thoroughbred Miners Frolic.

Petplan Horse of the year –
Mistral Hojris – the international dressage horse of British European team silver medallist Laura Bechtolsheimer, who also gave Laura (24) her first individual medal – bronze – in the grand prix special at the European Championships held at Windsor during the summer of 2009. Mistral Hojris and Laura also broke British records and now have the honour of being the highest ever scoring British combination in international competition.

The Under-25 rider award –
The under-25 rider award also went to the discipline of eventing being won by successful Young Rider Laura Collett for her outstanding achievements. Twenty-year-old Laura won individual and team gold medals at the Young Rider European Championships in Belgium with Rayef. During the year Laura also won the one-star CCI at Hartpury and the two-star CCI at Burgie all with different horses.

The Cynthia Muir trophy
(Under-18 award) –

16 year old Junior European Gold Medallist Carian Scudamore from Cardigan, Dyfed was presented the Cynthia Muir Trophy as the ‘most outstanding rider under 18-years of age.
During 2009 Carian was a member of the Tretorn Junior European Championship Team, bringing home individual Gold riding Sarah Hancock’s Angel III. The trophy was presented by Mrs Cynthia Muir’s daughters Mrs Corran Robertshaw and Mrs Ciari Dyson.

The Liz Dudden Trophy –

This trophy recognises the contribution to equestrian sport by someone other than a competitor and was presented to Pony Club Chief Executive Judy Edwards. Judy took up her role as Chief Executive of The Pony Club in 2005. During her equestrian career she has been a member of the BSJA Executive Committee, run the Coppice Acres show jumping arena, been a member of the BSJA Junior International Training and Selection committee and is an FEI judge.

Books of recollections
All members of the British European gold medal three-day-event team (Tina Cook, William Fox-Pitt, Nicola Wilson & Oliver Townend) and the British European silver medal dressage team (Carl Hester, Laura Bechtolsheimer, Maria Eilberg & Emma Hindle) were presented with a photo album of pictures taken at their respective championships. 

BEWA writing award
The association holds an annual writing award aimed at prospective equestrian journalists under the age of 25. The winner, as judged by a panel from the BEWA committee, will have the opportunity to spend a week gaining work experience in the London office of the British weekly magazine Horse & Hound. 

Last year’s winner was 22-year-old Anna Brookman a student in Rural Land Management at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester.
